It's a pretty hefty program. It felt like I had some awareness of what its capabilities were. I wanted to be able to own the software outright, which is why I didn't go with those guys.I went with QuarkXPress because I had some prior experience like 20 years ago using a version of it prior. It was also on a monthly subscription basis only, and I didn't want to make that kind of a commitment on an ongoing basis.
I feel like if you know what you want to do and what you want to control, that's a good headstart before you make a product selection like this. But it was definitely a pretty challenging onboarding.QuarkXPress is great because it's got so many micro-level ways to adjust and format and things like that that are really important as a designer, as a creator. There was a lot of hands-on mentoring that needed to be done, but it was a rewarding switch. It was a big change for some of the folks to learn. The training was thorough and there were enough online tutorials to help me get up to speed.QuarkXPress is a significant program.
User interface hides itself when window is out of focus for no reason, infuriating when trying to follow a tutorial in a web browser. I call customer support asking for help to get Table styles to work, and they respond that Table styles just don't work on some tables and I have to live with it. Scrolling on a page with 15-20 elements is slow on a modern computer. Table of contents automation lacks customization. Can't open multiple projects at once, makes transferring things to a new project a huge pain. And they make simple what other products cause hair-loss over.Quark not being a subscription based media creation software is the bee's knees!! And the ability and power of all the software can do for the price is pretty great!!Cons: Design flaws in software are a constant obstacle.
The support community is sparse and their help forum confirmation email didn't send even after requesting new ones, so I wasn't able to join and ask questions. Exporting PDF has no progress bar, the software just goes "not responding" for 10-20 minutes so you have no idea how long you will have to wait. Anytime you click on one of the palettes in the side bar, the whole user interface goes into a mini-seizure and flashes light and dark.
